Q. Have you ever done any volunteer work? If not, what sort might you be inclined to do?

United States

A. Yes I have, at a house for elderly people. It was really cool because you could sit and chat with them and learn a lot of stuff about your own city you would've never imagined. They've got thousands of stories and years of experience to share. It makes me sad to think they're virtually abandoned there.
I did it as part of a school project (still volunteered) and ever since, I go on visits every now and then to chat with them old folks.
Recently I heard of the death of one of them (I'll referr to him as Mr. R). R died from diabetes, and months before he passed away, we chatted about it, because I'm diabetic too. I cheered him up because he had no idea what diabetes was all about. It made me proud of myself to make myself useful and to have him as my friend. I respected him as much as my grandfather and really miss him every time I visit the place.
It serves me realize how little time we're granted on the earth and how much of a difference we can make in someone's life with just a small talk from time to time.
