Q. Is it pointless to recycle? Does it just ease our guilt, what are we actually saving by separating our green glass from our brown??

A. Actually, you are indeed helping the planet, as melting the glass down and re-using it uses much less energy than completely manufacturing new glass from scratch. Seperating the colours helps at the recycling plant, as each colour can be recycled separately, and there is no need to bleach out the colours, thus reducing the number of harmful chemicals going into the environment.
