Q. What will people wear at 'noughties' fancy dress parties?

UNKNOWN

A. Hell, I don't even know what to wear now that we are in the noughties. Do people really call now the noughties? You'd think with the decade nearly done I'd know this by now, but I don't hear people refer to the decade for some reason. In other decades I did, but not now. I think that's because other decades had more of their own identities. This decade is dull. It sort of draws from the 70's a little, but not with abandon. It sort of draws from grunge a little. But not fully. I can't really tell any distinct identity for it. It's a wasted era as far as I'm concerned. So slacker in its attitude that it can't commit to any distinct style. Yet 10 or 20 years from now with the summary of hindsight and different later styles to compare it to we'll fix on some defining characteristics of this era and go with them.
I'm guessing this: fake tattoos and piercings. They'll be considered conformist nonsense in the future so they'll stick 'em on their faces and necks and lower backs at costume parties just to mock this era. Knit caps. Hmm, some of the less flamboyant 70's style that we ape now- oranges and swirling patterns, gypsy ethnic bohemian and what have you. I'd say desert camo army outfits but we'll probably still be embroiled in the wars in the middle east a few decades from now and it won't be a distinct feature of this period.
I guess for girls whatever it is that defines hannah montana (I don't pay attention enough. Is it scarves and layered clothes or something? Beats me) and other pop ephemera... I just don't pay attention to style enough. I'm trying to hibernate through this decade as much as possible. And probably the next too. Wake me in the thirties. Style might be pretty cool by then.
